Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)

Example: $50 bill at 20% → $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip. Add to get the total: $50 + $10 = $60.

Standard tip percentages vary by service type and country:

• Restaurants (US) — 18–20% is standard; 25% for excellent service
• Food delivery — 15–20%, or more for large or complex orders
• Taxis and rideshares — 15–20%
• Hotel housekeeping — $2–5 per night
• Bars — $1–2 per drink, or 15–20% of the tab

Outside the US, tipping culture varies significantly — many European and Asian countries tip little or not at all.

The formula for an even split:

Per Person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of People

Example: $80 bill + $16 tip (20%) = $96 ÷ 4 people = $24 per person.

Etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount — the tip rewards service, not a government charge.

In practice the difference is minimal. On a $60 meal with 8% tax, the difference between tipping 20% pre-tax ($12) vs. post-tax ($12.96) is under $1.
