Overview: Assistant vs Answer Engine
ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant that has added web search over time. Perplexity is a search engine that was built AI-first, designed from day one to answer questions with cited sources. They overlap, but the overlap is narrower than most people assume.
If you open ChatGPT, it will happily write a short story, debug your Python, generate an image, and hold a voice conversation. If you open Perplexity, you're going to ask a question and get a cited, structured answer that reads like a mini research brief. The right tool depends on what you actually do in a browser tab all day.
Research and Citations
This is where Perplexity shines. Every response comes with numbered inline citations, a source list, and the ability to drill into each one. For journalists, analysts, researchers, and anyone who cares whether a claim is actually grounded, that workflow is significantly better than ChatGPT's browsing mode, which cites inconsistently and sometimes paraphrases without sources.
Perplexity also exposes different "Focus" modes - Academic, Social, Finance, and so on - that scope which parts of the web the model pulls from. That makes it much less likely to pull a Reddit comment into a medical summary.
Writing, Reasoning, and Creative Work
ChatGPT is clearly stronger here. GPT-4o produces better long-form creative writing, handles complex coding tasks more gracefully, and has access to reasoning models (the o-series) that can grind through multi-step problems. Perplexity can route to other models through its Pro plan, but the product is optimized for short answers with sources, not long creative drafts.
For anything where you want the model to generate new work rather than summarize existing work, ChatGPT is the better tool.
Model Flexibility
Perplexity Pro is interesting because it lets paying users choose the backend model for each query - GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet 4, xAI Grok, and Perplexity's own Sonar models are all available. That gives you an effective "one subscription, many models" setup if you want to compare outputs. ChatGPT is more locked into the OpenAI family, though OpenAI's lineup is broad enough that most users don't notice.
Pricing
Both charge $20/month for their main paid tier. With ChatGPT Plus you get GPT-4o, image generation, voice, file uploads, and GPT Store access. With Perplexity Pro you get unlimited Pro searches, file analysis, access to multiple frontier models, and API credits. Perplexity also bundles various partner perks - things like a year of free access to some third-party tools - that shift over time.
Which One Should You Use?
Use ChatGPT if you…
- Write creative or long-form content
- Code, debug, or build with AI daily
- Need image or voice generation
- Want a single do-it-all assistant
- Use many third-party integrations
Use Perplexity if you…
- Do a lot of research and fact-checking
- Need cited, source-backed answers
- Want access to multiple frontier models
- Replace Google search with AI
- Track fast-moving news or markets
Our Verdict
ChatGPT is the better all-around assistant. Perplexity is the better research tool. They're not really competitors so much as complements, and plenty of knowledge workers pay for both. If you have to pick one and you spend more time generating than searching, go ChatGPT. If you spend more time searching than generating, Perplexity will save you hours.
